Adding a New Instance to a Cross-Subnet Hot/Warm DR Environment

Summary

How to add a new instance to a multi-site, cross-subnet hot/warm disaster recovery (DR) environment.

Information

In order to add a new instance to both a production site and a DR site use the following steps:

  1. Present the necessary shared disk(s) to the production site.
  2. Manage the disk(s) through Storage Manager.
  3. Add a Vhost to the production site.
  4. Add the shared disk(s) to the diskgroup for the Vhost.
  5. Install the new instance on the desired production nodes.
  6. Add the new instance to the Vhost, selecting the shared disk(s) for Data and Logs.
  7. Replicate the disk(s) from the production site to the DR site.
  8. Once replication is complete, break the replication between sites.
  9. Present the necessary share disk(s) to the DR site.
  10. Manage the disk(s) through Storage Manager.
  11. Add a Vhost to the DR site.
  12. Add the replicated disk(s) to the diskgroup for the Vhost.
  13. Install the new instance on the desired DR nodes.
  14. Add the new instance to the Vhost, Selecting the replicated Data and Log locations on the shared disk(s). Make sure to deselect the New Virtualization checkbox.
  15. Stop the Vhost on the DR site.
  16. Restart the replication of the shared disk(s) between the production site and the DR site.

Additional Information

To test failover of the instance between the production site and the DR site use the following steps:

  1. Stop the Vhost on the production site.
  2. Break or reverse the replication between the production site and the DR site.
  3. Verify presentation and write access to the shared disk(s) on the DR site.
  4. Enable the Vhost on the DR site.
  5. Verify that the instance is up and available.
  6. Modify the DNS resolution for the Vhost on the production site to point to the Vhost on the DR site.
  7. Test connectivity.
